Groeni
Nihx Project Mooncircle TBR: 30th March Inspired by the transition of land at the foot of New Zealand's Mount Victoria, this sonically ground breaking and artistically relevant long release takes Groeni to new levels of mastery. The trio of technicians bring their compositions to the computer at the last minute, formulating their sounds with analogue composing before penning down the digital interpretations. For electronic music, this top down approach records more than a random selection of settings and loops, but translates real human thought and planning into replicable and polished notations. The album starts with a quiet build, slow moving music gently begins to rain down on the atmosphere as great forces are laid down in bare detail. Warm and wholesome tones reflect from still waters before the haunting sound of vocals drown out the silence. Emotive lines from a dreamy mind gloss over a subtly moving backdrop. Beautiful and melancholy yet shimmering with human light, layers of harmony build gradually as the music slowly swells to fill larger spaces. Rhythms bunch up in curls of regular driving energy, bringing the album to a sweet spot which teeters on the high energy while keeping its feet in the stillness below. The addition of guitar and voice give a quality of natural magic which sit like figurines on the digital scape, rolling out like fields and valleys. Playful techniques make the listening experience more interesting yet the traditional forms and lyric patterns keep the music anchored in the near usual. Frantic interludes of fresh vibrancy reveal souls of energetic spark as pretty melodies keep pace with the inner sensations that hold things together. Simple patterns sit gently upon each other with stitches of flair to keep the flow interesting, the cake of sound drifts from the speakers in expertly layered masonry, dancing with itself as it gently falls over the furniture. With over two years on the clock in making this record, and a deep soulful connection to the music from all involved, Nihx marks a centrepiece in the legacy of Groeni. More than electronic music, the warmth of the human element greets the digital like long distance friends who spend too much time apart. Moody and moving, the record enjoys a seat in the mind somewhere in the halls of ambient theatre. Pre-order/buy Groeni Nihx on vinyl or digital from Amazon UK and digital from Amazon US. Albrecht La'brooy
Tidal River Apollo Records TBR: Feb 2nd Melbourne based electronic music with strong roots in the local scene, Albrecht La'brooy provides us with a deep and textural interpretation of cosmic house and chill zone sounds. Work began on this record after the pair spent some time in one of Australia's beautiful National Parks. Wilson's Promontory sits in a green and lush part of the South Eastern coast. With six servings on the record, the music is said to progress like the times of day, starting at first thing and ending with last thing at night. Organic loveliness sets the perfect scene as the albumette begins its journey. Just like the sunrise, a smooth and washy guitar melody jams in slow time to a slowly progressing backdrop. On shimmering rays of almost nothing, the first bars dance like wisps of sunny cloud. With each passing moment, the illumination reveals ever more distant horizons from side to side. Subtle rhythm is knitted in panning capsules that fuzz and crackle like bonfire sounds played on vinyl. The wandering quality of the music brings on a sensation of dream mixed with subconscious remembering. Sublime dream-waves with ghostly reverberations mirror an atmosphere of tranquil beauty and calm. Non-electronic elements run through the release, and as it progresses through each track time of day, more layering and intrigue is permitted to peak above the stillness. Chewy synthesiser and simmering loops marry to the sound of breaking moments. Light on the touch like feathers and gentle fingers and with a perfume of something lively, this relaxation album invites us to sit and be with it. A hungry progression keeps things a little exciting and the consistent whistle of prettiness allows the mind to enjoy. Buy/pre-order the album from Amazon UK And Amazon US Junes
Circuit Rift Galdoors TBR: February 9th When Newcastle based garage door company Galdoors moved to Leeds and then Berlin to become a record label, Junes was one of the pioneer artists to work with the newcomers. Now, several years since, this well established sound house of electronic and experimental grooves is poised to release another anticipated Junes record. With regular plays on the monthly KMAH Radio show, administered by Galdoors, the eclectic two hour mixathons taste various forms of garage (believe it or not), acidic techno, and home-made distilled experiments. The new Junes EP ought to fit in nicely, with a sweet A side then something extra on the end as an extended double B. Circuit Rift begins with a pulsing bleep which is mirrored almost straight away by an almost chaotic percussion which tampers gently with the flow. Whistly tones penetrate the underscore while an energetic bass groove adds a layer of subtle tempest. With a soulful and relaxed attitude, the music becomes intense by means of its own power. The formulations of sound in their accurately vectored positions produce a blanket of rhythm and mood which covers all corners. The six minute thumper takes us into the zone where it was forged, preparing us for more. As the EP evolves, and the second track enters the scene, a dirtier sound is instantly noticeable with a looped quick step bass drum. Distortions on the percussion warm up the sound and bring it down a notch at the same time, then mysterious chimes swing in from the side to lighten the mix. Deep notions of unusual sounds ring across the stereosphere while the dancing pace is added to by little sprinkles of new sound with each pass. Awake is a dreamy track with intense background rhythms decorated by breathy chords and jumpy blips. An almost tropical sensation swooshes in on the back of a fast tapping drum beat for the final track on this record. A melodic flurry brings a jolly and sunshine infused sensation while clapping beats break down the tempo into a more manageable fraction. Electronic swirls flow from the top like flying saucers, bringing an extra-terrestrial element to the already intense and progressive final number. Brass Hand is a catchy number, with a different edge to the previous tracks. A little surprise perhaps for the final instalment. The tracks are available to preorder as a download from Amazon UK and from Amazon US. Vinyl is expected in February from Amazon UK and from Amazon US. |
