Ty Lumnus Decompression EP Bricolage Records Out 28th September Glasgow based sound producer Ty Lumnus returns to the music factory with a distinctive new flavour. Previously known for surging down-tempo and dreamy soundscapes, this time rhythm is given a louder voice in the crowd. An experimental and space inspired dynamic remains, yet with beats involved, the music takes on a brand new dimension of drama. This four track diversion from reality replaces our everyday thoughts with an epic soundtrack full of visual prompts. Opening with an electronic blip pluck which soars like a violin in an empty room, abstract and punchy beats craft their way through the mixture. Crunching rhythms and crackling warm distortion brew with sporadic and almost jerky melodies. Bass rips through in a heavy sunken ditch as the sides elevate in repeating motifs and compositional progression. Glittering sonic displays burst in ever-present wafts of sparkly sound while a progressive rhythm brings the intensity into new levels. This is Bird In The Air Pump, it chugs along with whistling harmonics that crinkle in the neatly marching tempo. 3 In Goats begins on a tubular bass which curls and shudders with each blast of its piping sound structure. Walking hi-hats chirrup in jostling kinesis until a new synthesiser phrase weaves an exploratory pattern among the already mature landscape. Looking around in all directions, the notes wander like searching eyes, unsure of what they will perceive. Chords bustle in the undertones in pulsating patters that continually fuel the building percussion section. The music grows each notion of self and allows new elements to adorn the progressive architecture. New bars bring new feels and as they rotate on their stereo axis the space allows new sounds to fill the potential. Next, a melodic drum-riff clamours across an open valley. Windy sonics create lines in the air as their notations swerve in abstract twists. Helices of sound build into an up-beat dancing rhythm that warbles and shifts as if there are bumps in the road. Close to life feels in the twinges of layering match repeating jingles and rhythm sandwiches that become bricks that adorn a well sculpted design. Mysterious high end swirls dig at the ceiling while soft yet insistent pulsing drums merge in a river of percussion. Tolerances has an edgy quality, underneath the faced is perhaps a disfiguring current of chaotic froth. The EP ends on Haldane Tables. A wooden instrument with a deep pot of sound beneath it creates percussive phonics in a rainy window of shimmering. Synthesiser with wobbling whistles starts to display a melodic intention before a chiming digital tone adds an array of shifting notes. These emerge into a deep and more layered instrument, it fizzes and drills as the composition evolves and builds under its own pressures. New waves of high pitch string fly out from crevices left over to form unique three dimensional patterns in the sonic sky. Building, breathing, almost living isobars of sound nestle among each other in a slow dance that snakes like a river across various cartographies.
