Graintable
Universal Ash (Reinterpreted Universes EP) Ransom Note Records Out 28th August The iconic work of Jim Cooke's Graintable has been adapted for new audiences by some of the scene's most luminary names. Universal Ash is, in the words of the artist, where “real life shines through the cracks ….the cracks are opened up and put back together”. The original Universal Ash LP was a chapter defining artwork in the Graintable opus, and it gets a second run with these remixes. Fans of the re-designers will no doubt find their way into this artist. We open on a strange drunken drone which warps and resonates into key with a quick synthesiser. Drums batch the companions together in a driving tempo while wandering bass begins to distinguish the lines in the road. Scratchy bubble sounds collide in the undertone which becomes a kind of vocalisation, albeit strange. Hologram Teen's Manhattan Skyline remix of Tea Forest takes us immediately into a realm of sound structure with evocative shapes. Tidewater is next, and it's been remixed by Timothy Clerkin. It rattles into view on windy pipes that oscillate and chord along the tracks of a jumpy drum. More bubbling sounds scatter in the backdrop as pan-pipe sounds curdle in the warm summer air. Broken keys clamber along the chain-link fence in spider-like manoeuvres, spanning incredible distances as the speed of life seems to be accelerated. Melodic chimes and fast break-beat drumming reveal a dreamy corridor of endless society, gleaming in the multi-coloured spotlights. Electronic blip bass opens the third number. It gallops along sidings that echo and reverberate. Cymbals are added, providing another layer to the gradual progression. New drums work themselves in before scattered digital tones bounce in trailing lines of scale. Images of sine waves conjure within the repeating motifs and sound patterns as the evolution grows under delicate lamps of chord. Minimal yet rich and multi-patterned, this Flug 8 remix of Dark Surface gives it such a sheen that we can almost see our faces in it. The EP ends on FMMPC which is remixed by Coast2c. It starts with a thumping drum, somewhere in the back of our dream. Strange and dense tones start a mechanical amalgamation with hypnotic pressure building. Space-age whirs and science sounds beam and project along humming fields of power. These distort and push the sounds into an encapsulated orbiter while rhythmic sensations ride the shock-wave. Systems 1991
Suprawater (Single) System Records Out: 14th August What The Human Said To The Octopus, plasma activated water, and electronic sounds. Abstract indeed, and that's how we like it. Formulating sound and concept into one single, Systems 1991 published a poetic script to accompany the track. It's time to let the music speak for itself. The poem is as follows. THE HUMAN SAID TO THE OCTOPUS: IF I COULD SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE OF COLOURS AND INK LORD OCTOPUS, COULD YOU UNDERSTAND ME? I WOULD TELL YOU ABOUT THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF MY SPECIES ACHIEVEMENTS TO BE PROUD OF I WOULD TELL YOU HOW WE HUMANS HAVE SET FOOT ON THE MOON THAT MOON THAT DIRECTS THE TIDES OF YOUR OCEAN LORD OCTOPUS, ARE YOU PROUD OF US? PROUD TO BE AN EARTHLING? TO INHABIT THE SAME PLANET AS WE DO? DO YOU CELEBRATE WHEN OUR INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION HOVERS ABOVE YOUR OCEAN? WHEN OUR PROBES REACH OTHER PLANETS SUCH AS MARS AND SATURN AND JUPITER AND PLUTO? OR THE ONE NAMED AFTER YOUR GOD NEPTUNE? IS NEPTUNE YOUR GOD? WE SET OUT FOR ALL OF US AND YOU INTO THE UNKNOWN SEARCHING FOR INTELLIGENT LIFE OUTSIDE OUR PLANET ALIEN TO US AND ALIEN TO YOU ARE YOU IMPRESSED, LORD OCTOPUS? ARE YOU PROUD? THE OCTOPUS SAID TO THE HUMAN: IF I COULD SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE MR. HUMAN, YOU COULD ALSO NOT UNDERSTAND ME AS I FLOAT WITH THOSE WHO STAYED IN THE WATER WHERE GRAVITY HAS A MUCH LESSER IMPACT ON OUR BODIES THAT KNOW ANOTHER FORM OF GRACE WHAT USE TO YOU OR TO US RIGHT NOW IS YOUR NEPTUNE? THE GOD OR THE PLANET ARE TOO FAR FROM US. YOU TAKE PICTURES OF DISTANT GALAXIES WHILE YOU IGNORE THE MID-ATLANTIC RIDGE AND THE MARIANA TRENCHES AND THE HORIZON DEEP SOMETIMES YOU LOOK LIKE A CHILD EXPLORING THE ATTIC WHEN YOU ARE STILL AFRAID OF WHAT IS UNDER YOUR BED, MR. HUMAN WE KNOW YOU MUST DRINK WATER EVERY DAY TO RETURN MOMENTARILY TO THE SEA WE ARE ALIEN TO EACH OTHER WE ARE YOUR ALIEN INTELLIGENCE NOT ON ANOTHER PLANET BUT AT YOUR DOORSTEP BY THE SEA HAVE A GLASS OF WATER NOW, MR. HUMAN MEET US IN THAT WATER WHICH BINDS US So there we have it. Let's listen to the music. It begins with a crackling static like gushing wind in silent tunnels. A twanging bass tone creates a quick tempo, and the timbre begins to chop and swerve into treble. Huge drums build up as synthesiser fills the innards. A thrusting force drives the mix into an uplifting swing that gently picks us up and lifts us higher. Tones harmonise with a ferocious yet fluffy core, the rhythm drops revealing delicious orchestral sounds. The drums sprinkle on once more, build and evolve, then form a viscous spread that gives the music a dreamy sensation. The bass is then pushed to the forefront, allowing the music to build into a peak one more time. For a five minute number, this is a surprisingly rich and progressive work.
